Desperate, Artemio tenta il suicidio gettandosi nel fiume Naviglio, ma viene salvato da un barcaiolo che gli propone di lavorare per lui, vendendo droga ai ragazzi davanti le scuole.
Artemio rifiuta indignato e nell’inveire contro la città e i suoi abitanti spuntando sulle automobili parcheggiate viene fermato dalla polizia che lo rimanda al suo paese.

Ritornato alla sua pacifica esistenza di contadino, un giorno riceve inaspettatamente la visita della bella Angela, che nel frattempo ha scoperto che lui, nonostante la sua goffaggine, è stato accettato a un colloquio di lavoro per diventare assicuratore:

divenuto per lei un "buon partito", la ragazza accetta la sua vecchia proposta di nozze, ma Artemio, conscio dei sentimenti non sinceri della ragazza, decide di sposare l'unica donna che lo abbia sempre e solo amato per quello che è, ovvero Maria Rosa (fattasi, nel frattempo, molto più carina) e di vivere con lei eternamente "contadini e contenti!"
