Ancora una chicca di fine anni 80-primissimi 90, questa volta non cinematografica ma pubblicitaria. A incantarci è infatti, oggi come allora, lo spot di un profumo: l’indimenticabile Egoiste della maison Chanel. Ironico, sensualissimo, ansiogeno, di immediato effetto. La scena si consuma fra i balconi di un palazzo da cui alcune donne si mettono a urlare istericamente lanciando teatrali invettive («La pay, you wretch! "-" I have an enemy, I swear! "-" I will be relentless! ") against a man whose apartment is located in the central part of the building.

Il mondo è, in un certo senso, tutta una questione di prospettive. Quella di un ammaliante pappone che incontra una prostituta e, assoldandola, se ne innamora, è una storiella che, almeno in apparenza, ha poco la stoffa del copione di successo. Ma se, guardando meglio, ci accorgiamo che lui è un fascinoso Richard Gere quarantenne, lei una Julia Roberts nel pieno dell’età e della forma fisica, e che i marciapiedi sono quelli di Hollywood, andiamo a colpo sicuro, e il trash diventa fresh senza data di scadenza.

La commedia “Pretty Woman” è in realtà del 1990, ma le atmosfere che si respirano, gli abiti scleti, il trucco e il parrucco, la struttura e i dialoghi del film, tutto ha un retrogusto pienamente anniottantesco.

La vicenda ha per protagonista Vivian Ward ( Julia Roberts ), una giovane prostituta di Hollywood la cui vita è destinata a cambiare a partire dal momento dell’incontro con Edward Lewis ( Richard Gere ), un affarista miliardario e senza scrupoli appena uscito dall'ennesimo fallimento sentimentale. Ed è qui che Vivian fa l’ “affare”: Edward le propone infatti di restare con lui per l'intera settimana ad un prezzo da capogiro, offerta che la ragazza, naturalmente, accetta di buon grado.

Il rapporto fra i due sembra inizialmente solo di tipo professionale, ma in breve tempo le cose cambiano e i buoni sentimenti non tardano ad arrivare, in uno scambio reciproco di positive influenze che vedrà lei tirar fuori il lato più umano di lui, mentre Edward le insegnerà lo stile e l’eleganza richiesti a una lady dell’alta società americana.

CURIOSITA’:

- Nella colonna sonora del film ci sono anche "Oh Pretty Woman" di Roy Orbison , canzone da cui è tratto il titolo del film, e "Show Me Your Soul" dei Red Hot Chili Peppers .

- Richard Gere , Julia Roberts and director Garry Marshall worked together again for Runaway Bride in 1999.
